The Sanzer Rebbe, on Thursday night, celebrated the engagement of his granddaughter in a small, intimate simcha held at his residence in the city of Netanya. This was a departure from the usual practice, as tenaim celebrations in the Rebbe’s family usually take place in a grand hall, accommodating thousands of Chassidim.
The rebbe explained the reason for this to those close to him: “How can we rejoice when Jewish blood is being shed? Many Jews are in distress and fear, and parents of children await good news from their loved ones.”
Members of the Rebbe’s household revealed that since the outbreak of the war, the Rebbe has been deeply concerned overall, intensifying his own tefillos and limud haTorah. He spends most of his day secluded in his room, except for urgent matters. In all the Sanzer botei medrash, the Rebbe has instructed the minyanim to recite the tefillah of “Avinu Malkeinu” daily during Shacharis and Mincha.
The granddaughter of the Rebbe who got engaged is a daughter of his son, Rav Yosef Moshe Dov Halberstam, rosh yeshiva and rov of the Sanzer kehillah in the United States. The chosson is a grandson of Rav Shmuel Halberstam, menahel of Mifal HaShas, son of the Tshakava Rebbe zt”l.
