Shlomo Zilberman, a chareidi soldier serving in the Paratroopers Brigade’s ‘Hetz’ company, took the opportunity to explain to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant the practice of observing shilchos Shabbos according to Rabbeinu Tam.
During a discussion with soldiers from the brigade, Gallant inquired about Zilberman’s experience in the military and his initial perception of the IDF before enlisting as a chareidi Jew. Zilberman candidly admitted, “I didn’t know what the army was. They had to explain this to me,” and he added that he was unfamiliar with even basic military distinctions, such as “red and black infantry boots.”
Zilberman also shared his dedication to his personal principles since joining the IDF. “I am very strict about my values, keeping the Shabbos according to Rabbeinu Tam [which adds an extra 40 minutes to the ending time of Shabbos],” he stated.
Curious about Gallant’s understanding, Zilberman asked, “Do you know what Rabbeinu Tam is?” He then clarified, “When you end the Shabbos, we observe an extra 40 minutes. This is very important to me. It is an integral part of my Shabbos.
Reflecting on his experience in the military, Zilberman expressed his contentment with his current posting and spoke positively about his commanders: “I was stationed here and I am very happy.”
He continued to emphasize the support he receives: “Everyone is supporting this, even the non-religious. If it continues, we will have a chareidi army.”
Gallant responded, “As long as the army continues to fight.”
Zilberman, with a smile, quipped back, “You will have to wear a kippah.”
