In open defiance of state regulations and his own administration’s pandemic health guidelines, President Donald Trump on Sunday hosted his first indoor rally since June, telling a packed, nearly mask-less Nevada crowd that the nation was “making the last turn” in defeating the virus. Eager to project a sense of normalcy in imagery, Trump soaked up the raucous cheers inside a warehouse. Relatively few in the crowd wore masks, with one clear exception: Those in the stands directly behind Trump, whose images would end up on TV, were mandated to wear face coverings. Not since a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that was blamed for a surge of coronavirus infections has he gathered supporters indoors.

Nearly all of the dozens of people reported missing after a devastating blaze in southern Oregon have been accounted for, authorities said, as crews continued to battle wildfires that have killed at least 33 victims from California to Washington state. The flames have destroyed neighborhoods, leaving a barren, gray landscape in their wake, driven tens of thousands of people from their homes and cast a shroud of smoke over the region. The crisis has come amid the coronavirus outbreak, the economic downturn and nationwide racial unrest that has led to protests in Portland for more than 100 days. “What’s next?” asked Danielle Oliver, who had to flee her home outside Portland. “You have the protests, coronavirus pandemic, now the wildfires.

A whistleblower’s allegation that he was pressured to suppress intelligence about Russian election interference is the latest in a series of similar accounts involving former Trump administration officials, raising concerns the White House risks undercutting efforts to stop such intrusions if it plays down the seriousness of the problem. There is no question the administration has taken actions to counter Russian interference, including sanctions and criminal charges on Thursday designed to call out foreign influence campaigns aimed at American voters. But Trump’s resistance to embracing the gravity of the threat could leave the administration without a consistent and powerful voice of deterrence at the top of the government heading into an election that U.S.

Gas prices have dipped in New Jersey and across the nation, and analysts say they expect the decline to continue. AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $2.22, down two cents from the week before. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $2.20, also down two cents from the previous week. Analysts say the approach of fall generally means decreased demand and therefore savings at the pump, but this year gas prices could drop even lower than prices seen so far this year. (AP)

Two members of Saudi Arabia’s royal family will have to answer questions about the Sept. 11 attacks in what lawyers for victims call a turning point in a long-running lawsuit, a federal judge ruled. U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in a written ruling unsealed late Thursday ordered Saudi Arabia to make the royals — and other Saudi witnesses, including current and former government official — available for depositions. It was unclear how and when the witnesses will be deposed, but the decision means “we can start uncovering what they know,” plaintiff’s attorney Jim Kreindler said Friday. The members of the royal family include Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who is a former intelligence chief in Saudi Arabia and was the kingdom’s U.S. ambassador from 1983 to 2005, court papers said.

Currently, Israel has no official diplomatic ties with Morocco although the two countries maintain unofficial intelligence, tourism, and trade ties. Furthermore, Israeli citizens are permitted in the country and the Moroccan government extends its protection to the Jewish community in Casablanca, the largest Jewish community in the Muslim world with about 2,000 Jews. Before Israel was founded in 1948, there were about 300,000 Jews in Morocco, most of whom emigrated to Israel, with Moroccan Jews comprising one of the largest Sefardi communities in Israel.
