Israel’s public hospitals are on the verge of collapse due to heavy debts stemming from the loss of billions of shekels in revenue during the coronavirus crisis. Not only were hospitals forced to halt all elective procedures during the crisis, medical tourism – normally the most lucrative source of revenue for Israeli hospitals – has ground to a complete halt. Furthermore, Israel’s Kupot Cholim (health funds) did not make any referrals or payments to hospitals during the height of the coronavirus crisis. At the same time, hospitals were forced to make a significant financial outlay for hospital equipment, including respirators, lab equipment and personal protective equipment to prepare for the possibility of treating thousands of critically ill coronavirus patients.

According to two recent polls conducted amongst the Charedi populace of Israel, there is a high level of support for annexing the Jewish towns in Judea and Samaria to become part of Israel. One poll was conducted for the Israel Democracy Institute in June and found that 84% of the ultra-Orthodox public backs annexation. Some 42 percent of those who fell into that category, said that they would only back annexation if the United States supports the measure as well. The Samaria Regional Council asked the Maagar Mochot polling group to conduct a poll as well from the Charedi community. Among those asked, 72% of those who voted for Shas were in favor of annexation while some 62% of United Torah Judaism (UTJ) voters supported the move.

There are currently 3,019 active cases, including 34 in serious condition, 24 of whom are intubated. According to the Jerusalem Post, the mortality rate in Israel is 1.6%, which means about one out of 61 coronavirus patients have died.

A homeless man is facing federal charges in connection to the burning of a police officer’s vehicle as it was parked on a New York City street, officials said Thursday. Authorities said Michael Rodriguez, 32, had approached the vehicle, which was parked on a Brooklyn street and had a placard of the New York Police Department, in the early morning hours of June 2. The car had been assigned to an NYPD captain. In the federal complaint, authorities said video footage showed Rodriguez pouring liquid on the unoccupied vehicle, putting cardboard on it and setting the cardboard on fire. Rodriguez was arrested Thursday and ordered detained pending trial by a federal judge. An email was sent to an attorney in the federal defender’s office for comment.

Four New York City ambulance workers who gave media interviews about their work on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic sued the city on Thursday, saying they were punished for speaking out. The plaintiffs include paramedic Elizabeth Bonilla, who said she was barred from patient care, overtime work and even wearing her uniform after the Associated Press followed her through the first half of a grueling 16-hour double shift in April. Two other paramedics said they were placed on restricted duty after talking to the media. Another plaintiff, emergency medical technician John Rugen, said the fire department suspended him without pay for a month for giving a television interview on a day off in April.
