Israel was shocked when the US suddenly announced the halt of the military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, saying that a “ceasefire” had been reached and the Houthis agreed not to attack US ships. According to a New York Times report on Monday, President Donald Trump decided to halt the offensive against the Houthis in Yemen after realizing it was an expensive campaign that was not yielding significant results. The initial military plan against the Houthis was a months-long military campaign of powerful airstrikes to destroy Houthi air defenses, followed by targeted assassinations, largely modeled on Israel’s war agaist Hezbollah.

Celebrate

In Parshas Emor the Torah discusses Shabbos and Yom Tov. The Gemara in Shabbos 118 and in Pesachim 112 say in the name of Rabi Akiva that a person should rather have a simple Shabbos, without any delicacies, rather than come on to other people for a loan or gift to enable them to procure delicacies. We pasken this way in Shulchan Aruch 242 where it states that if someone has to borrow money from others, but he has some money of his own, he should make sure to use his own money for Shabbos. We only say that one should celebrate Shabbos like a weekday (sans special foods) to someone who is in really dire financial straits.

The following question arises: Does the same thing apply to Yom Tov as well?

Disturbing details about the conditions that released hostage Edan Alexander endured in captivity in Gaza were revealed only hours after his release, Kan News reported. According to his initial testimony, Alexander endured severe torture in Gaza, mainly during lengthy interrogations, as well as physical violence and psychological terror. He was confined to a metal cage for an extended period of time, shackled by his hands and feet. When he was released, he required assistance to walk due to the long period he was shackled. He was deliberately starved while in captivity and endured extreme hunger. Iin recent months, as the Trump administration engaged in efforts for his release, he was provided with more food.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. — President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Jack Ciattarelli for governor of New Jersey, delivering a key boost to the Republican frontrunner in a hotly contested primary.

In a victory for global agrochemical maker Bayer, Georgia has become the second state to shield pesticide manufacturers from some lawsuits claiming that they failed to warn customers of potential dangers. The legislation signed Friday by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is designed to protect Bayer from lawsuits claiming that it failed to tell customers that its popular weed killer Roundup could cause cancer. It’s written broadly enough to provide legal protection in Georgia to any pesticide manufacturer that follows federal labeling requirements. North Dakota’s governor signed the first such law last month, and similar measures have been considered this year in at least nine other states. Bayer, based in Germany, acquired Roundup with the 2018 purchase of St. Louis-based Monsanto.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Israeli military forces carried out a targeted operation against high-ranking Hamas operatives who were entrenched within the Nasser Hospital complex in Khan Yunis.
According to a statement issued by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, the site functioned as a strategic base for planning and executing attacks aimed at Israeli citizens and soldiers.
The army further revealed that Ismail Barhoum, who succeeded the head of Hamas’ governing authority in Gaza and oversaw the group’s financial and institutional branches, had been directing operations from this very hospital until his elimination in a previous precision strike in March.

After Edan Alexander’s return from captivity in Gaza, Dr. Hagar Mizrachi, who oversees the medical division at the Health Ministry, voiced serious alarm regarding the physical and psychological state of those still being held hostage.
Speaking at Tel Aviv’s Sorousky Medical Center—where Alexander is currently receiving care—Dr. Mizrachi addressed the media to express her concerns.
“It is obvious to us that the terrorist organizations are denying the hostages medical treatment, holding them in subhuman conditions, and subjecting them to physical and mental abuse,” she said.

Syria’s newly installed ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa is pushing for a one-on-one meeting with President Donald Trump during his upcoming Middle East visit—dangling a dizzying package of incentives that includes oil deals, normalization with Israel, and even a Trump Tower in Damascus. According to multiple sources familiar with the effort, Sharaa is attempting to bypass traditional diplomatic channels by appealing directly to Trump’s knee-jerk instinct for big deals. The initiative is being spearheaded by Jonathan Bass, a pro-Trump American activist who met with Sharaa for four hours in Damascus on April 30.

The Kurdish militant group PKK announced Monday that it is disbanding and renouncing armed conflict as part of a new peace initiative with Turkey, ending four decades of hostilities. The decision by the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, promises to end one of the longest insurgencies in the Middle East and could have significant impact in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. It was announced by the Firat News Agency, a media outlet close to the group, days after the PKK convened a party congress in northern Iraq. In February, PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned on an island near Istanbul since 1999, urged his group to convene a congress and formally decide to disband and disarm.

Reservists injured in the ongoing conflict over the past 18 months gathered Monday night for a heartfelt meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, part of a special initiative led by the War Wounded Forum.
Speaking to the group, the Prime Minister made a forceful declaration: “We will conquer Gaza, and our security control will remain there forever. Within days, things are going to happen in Gaza. Things will happen that you haven’t seen before.”
He emphasized that the current campaign has a clearly defined goal. “We didn’t do everything we’ve done in Gaza so far just to return to the starting point. Things have changed; a decision has been made to go all the way. We are very close.”

TEHILLIM: The name of the Lakewood resident seriously injured in Monticello this evening is Yehuda ben Rivka. Please include him in your tefillos.

Israel sent a request to the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to withdraw the arrest warrants against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after examining the investigations and detailed testimony regarding allegations of rape against ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Khan issued the warrants to deflect attention from the allegations against him. Israeli officials believe that this information is “explosive material that can affect the case.” According to the report, Israel also asked the court to order the suspension of its investigations into alleged Israeli atrocities in Palestinian areas.

BREAKING IN MONTICELLO: A Lakewood man in his twenties was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of East Broadway and Rose Valley Road earlier this evening. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday urged California cities to clear homeless encampments, escalating efforts anew to address an intractable issue of his time in office: the makeshift tents that line underpasses, parks and streets up and down the state. Newsom’s administration unveiled a blueprint for a camping ban that counties, cities and towns can directly adopt or modify to achieve his goals. The Democratic governor is also releasing $3.3 billion in voter-approved funds to expand housing and treatment options for homeless residents. “The time for inaction is over. There are no more excuses,” Newsom said. Newsom, a former mayor of San Francisco, made homelessness a priority upon taking office in 2019, tackling a problem that’s largely been the purview of mayors and local government.

Nearly a quarter mile above the bustling streets of Manhattan, One World Trade Center has opened its highest floors for lease—marking a major chapter in Lower Manhattan’s ongoing evolution.
A decade after the building first welcomed tenants, the 89th and 90th floors are now hitting the market, offering a rare opportunity in New York City’s competitive office space scene.
Future occupants will tower above the entire World Trade Center complex, directly overlooking the solemn 9/11 Memorial pools, etched into the footprints of the fallen Twin Towers.

The unfolding crisis at Newark Liberty International Airport shows no signs of letting up, as The New York Post exclusively reveals that only one fully certified air traffic controller will be on duty during the airport’s peak hours tonight.
Between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the entire flow of planes arriving and departing Newark will be overseen by just a single certified controller, assisted only by a trainee. This falls far short of the usual staffing level of 15 controllers, which is considered standard for a shift of that magnitude.
