The war in Ukraine continues to rage on, as Ukrainian towns are destroyed by bombs. Many of the Jewish community and beyond have managed to escape to relative safety, for now. Some, however, are still left behind: The sick, the eldery, and the poor.

When most Jews around the world think of the Ukrainian Jewish community, a single word comes to mind: Uman.
Uman has long been a thriving community, full of holy sites, the famous kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov, as well as the host of the beloved yearly Rosh Hashanah prayers. Year after year, the people of Uman have given space in their own home and food from their own kitchens to Jewish travelers abroad, excited to do the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim. This week, as bombs rained down on the city, the Jews of Uman were forced to leave everything they know behind.

Many have already fled to safer neighboring countries, but a vast majority have stayed behind.

They have stayed behind for a number of reasons, while many have stayed to lend themselves to the resistance, most have stayed behind simply because they do not have the resources to flee to safety, or they have elderly or sickly members of their family who are unable to make the arduous trek.

Whatever their reason for staying, they have all been in regular contact with their local Chabad institutions to seek shelter, food, and other critically important necessities needed to survive this Russian invasion.

In a somber video address to the public, Rabbi Paysach Krohn described what may have been one of the most terrifying shabboses in modern history. “Putin’s war” has already killed hundreds, and Ukrainian skies are filled with fighter jets.
A large portion of the Ukrainian Jewish community spent Friday night in a basement, surrounded on all sides by the sound of bombs. They currently have guards at the entrance of the hotel where they are seeking shelter, as well as armed escorts taking the sick to hospitals. This protection costs over $5,000 a day.

Like our forefathers in the midbar who accepted the Torah at Har Sinai, many of us long for our Yeshiva days, when we were able to devote all our time and energy to the geshmak of total immersion in the breadth and depth of the yam hatorah.
