Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine as of 5 A.M Israel time this morning and there have already been several tragic civilian casualties reported despite Russia’s claimed attempt to avoid civilian deaths. As of a few hours ago, the situation escalated when Ukraine’s airspace was closed and all flights were cancelled.

With war looming on the border, the Ukrainian Jewish community is preparing for impact. Concerns include safety, food, and other supplies necessary for survival.
Looting has already had an impact on the availability of kosher food, and without imports the religious community may be left without options.
General violence is also on the rise, in a region of the world already known for antisemitism. Leaders of the Jewish schools and synagogues say they need armed guards for protection, but such luxuries are beyond their capabilities. Security can cost roughly $1000 a day.

Sitting shiva is always an uncomfortable experience. For the Shor family of Jerusalem, however, the level of discomfort is on another level:
Last week, a horrific fire ripped through their home, killing their 12-year old son, Eliyahu. Eliyahu’s parents watched on in horror, as firefighters yelled for the boy to jump from his window. He was too afraid to jump, and tragically passed away. They were rushed to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. What came next, however, was a shock that had not even occurred to them while they were processing the death of their son: They had nowhere to sit shiva.
