Chanukah is celebrated each year by millions of people around the world but for the first time in history, this year it can be celebrated by everyone together.
On the 7th night of Chanukah 1 million Jews around the world will make history.
“The world has witnessed much darkness this year” said event spokespersons Mendel Haller and Rabbi Ari Shishler, “yet Chanukah celebrates our ability to overcome impossible odds and band together to generate hope, goodness and light to dispel the world’s darkness”.

Rain begins to pound on the roof of the Egged bus as it winds up the hill toward the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. Masked travellers young and old sit in their seats and stare out the window, as the streets gutters fill with water. Suddenly, a gasp and a commotion near the back of the bus. A young woman with a brown sheitel has fainted. Another passenger, a nurse from the hospital, recognizes her from the oncology ward. She has cancer. She must be on her way to her chemo.

Last week in a delivery room at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem, the doctors handed a newborn baby boy to his mother. “Mazel tov!,” the nurses cried out, as they do in Israel. As Chagit took her baby into her arms, she burst into tears. A somber silence fell over the room. It was clear that unlike those of some mothers giving birth that day, Chagit’s were not tears of joy.

Tonight, huddles of talmidim will stand in the biting December cold, peering over each other’s shoulders to get a glimpse of the Rosh Yeshiva lighting his menorah. Such is the case with all of the biggest rabbanim of Israel. Some have small gatherings, others large crowds, watching on to answer ‘Amen’ to his bracha and observe his customs. Though the traditions of the rabbis of klal yisroel vary, there is one custom which nearly every one of the biggest talmidei chachamim has participated in for many years: Donating tzedaka to the organization Vaad HaRabbanim.

Rav Yosef Weiss zt”l wasn’t just a menahel. He was a guide, a mashpiah, a friend, and an inspiration to thousands.
He was an individual who touched so many lives in so many ways.
His fatherly love and his expansive heart touched people of all ages.
To him, every person, every child, was a world unto himself, an olam maleh. He treated every individual as a vital, integral member of Klal Yisroel, and he accorded them the utmost respect, encouraging, guiding and uplifting.
As we remember and seek to emulate Rabbi Weiss, we are embarking on a campaign beginning with a dedication of a Sefer Torah in his memory, and continuing with adding his additional dream projects in Yeshiva.
