The violent riots by hundreds of Palestinians on the Gazan-Israeli border resumed on Tuesday afternoon for the fifth consecutive day. Several Palestinians even crossed the security fence. Israel closed Erez Corssing, the only pedestrian crossing out of the Strip into Israel, on erev Rosh Hashanah for safety reasons. In response to the riots, the crossing has remained closed to the 18,000 Palestinians in Gaza who have permits to work in Israel According to an Associated Press report, the Gaza Strip’s finance ministry announced this month it was halving the salaries of civil servants following a visit by the Qatari envoy to Gaza. The Qatari government did not respond to an inquiry on the matter but a Hamas political member admitted to AP that there are “problems” between Hamas and Qatar but would not comment on whether the riots were related to the issue. i24NEWS Middle East correspondent Ariel Oseran asserts that the purpose of the riots is to pressure Qatar for more aid money as well as to bolster the legitimacy of Hamas as a resistance group.
