The White House says that it does not currently support a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, saying instead that “pauses” could be used to get humanitarian aid to non-terrorist residents of Gaza. “We do not believe that a ceasefire is the right answer right now,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Monday. “We believe that a ceasefire right now benefits Hamas… We do not support a ceasefire at this time. ” “What we have said should be considered and explored are temporary localized humanitarian pauses to allow aid to get to specific populations and maybe even to help with the evacuation of people that want to get out,” he said. He added that about 45 trucks loaded with aid made it into the Gaza Strip on Sunday, and that the White House is working to increase that to about 100 per day. “We’re confident that we can get there in coming days,” Kirby said.
