Iran’s president on Friday delivered an unprecedented speech to an annual pro-Palestinian rally in the Gaza Strip — a display of Iran’s importance to the Hamas militant group that rules the territory. In a virtual address to hundreds of supporters of Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad group gathered at a soccer field, Ebrahim Raisi urged Palestinians to press on with their struggle against Israel. “The initiative to self-determination is today in the hands of the Palestinian fighters,” Raisi said, dismissing Hamas’ domestic political rival, the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which has long sought to win Palestinian statehood through negotiations with Israel. The Palestinian Authority administers autonomous enclaves in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Rescuers raced Saturday to search for survivors and help hundreds of people left homeless after a powerful tornado cut a devastating path through Mississippi, killing at least 25 people, injuring dozens, and flattening entire blocks as it carved a path of destruction for more than an hour. One person was killed in Alabama. The tornado devastated a swath of the Mississippi Delta town of Rolling Fork, reducing homes to piles of rubble, flipping cars on their sides and toppling the town’s water tower. Residents hunkered down in bath tubs and hallways during Friday night’s storm and later broke into a John Deere store that they converted into a triage center for the wounded.

Many are questioning why Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is gearing to launch his presidential campaign, has not spoken up publicly after groups of neo-Nazis from the so-called “Goyim Defense League” distributed propaganda, protested, and harassed Jews across Florida this past weekend. In a viral video too vile for publication on YWN due to the sickening hate and obscenities therein, Goyim Defense League founder John Minadeo, who moved his hate group to Florida in December, is seen yelling “Heil Hitler, Jew!” at a passing man in front of a Chabad House. Minadeo was arrested several months ago after raising an anti-Semitic banner at the Auschwitz death camp in Poland. “Sir, do you think you should be put in an oven?” he said to another.

Maimonides Fail: social-media uproar after Jewish community leader shares his grandfather ignored at Maimonides ER for 36 hours It has just been three days since nearly 2,000 Boro Park residents rallied in solidarity with Save Maimonides and thousands more have signed petitions demanding accountability and oversight at the failing Maimonides hospital. Despite this, Maimonides seems to be continuing with business as usual: long waits and extreme negligence even when it comes to the most vulnerable patients – even in the Emergency Room.

German airline Lufthansa apologized Tuesday after all visibly Jewish passengers were prevented from boarding a flight due to mask violations by some. In a statement, Lufthansa said it “regrets the circumstances surrounding the decision to exclude passengers” from the flight. “On May 4, a large number of booked passengers were denied boarding on their onward flight with LH 1334 from Frankfurt to Budapest. Lufthansa regrets the circumstances surrounding the decision to exclude the affected passengers from the flight, for which Lufthansa sincerely apologizes,” the airline said. “While Lufthansa is still reviewing the facts and circumstances of that day, we regret that the large group was denied boarding rather than limiting it to the non-compliant guests.

A federal judge in Florida has voided the national mask mandate covering airplanes and other public transportation as exceeding the authority of U.S. health officials in the coronavirus pandemic. The decision Monday by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, also said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention improperly failed to justify its decision and did not follow proper rulemaking. In her 59-page ruling, Mizelle said the only remedy was to vacate the rule entirely across the country because it would be impossible to end it for the limited group of people who objected in the lawsuit.

As part of New Jersey’s education standards, teachers will be required to teach students in 2nd grade about gender identities when the new school year begins this fall. The standards were first put in place in 2020 but are only going into effect this September. The education standards call for second graders to understand the “core ideas” that all “individuals should feel welcome and included regardless of their gender [and] gender expression.” The “performance expectations” include talking about “the range of ways people express their gender and how gender role stereotypes may limit behavior.” Sample lessons that have been distributed in New Jersey include teaching a first grader that he has “boy parts” but “feel like” a girl.
