The condition of Hagaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein Zt””l was serious but stable, Tuesday morning. There were no notable signs that this would be the Ponavezh Rosh Yeshiva’s final few hours in this world. Now, close Talmidim of the Rosh yeshiva are recounting the final few minutes of his life, describing his unwavering commitment to Limud Hatorah, and to delivering his daily Shiur – literally until the very last breath. On Monday, the Rosh Yeshiva delivered his daily Shiur from his hospital bed. This was the daily Shuir that he had been giving for decades – even during Bain Hazmanim. His Shiur on Monday was given to a few close Talmidim, with a live hookup to the Yeshiva. The Monday night Shiur lasted for 16.5 minutes and was delivered with complete dedication.

Dear YWN, The Gedolim of Torah Umesorah are trying to correct a problem in the calendar that we have had for decades. When Rosh Chodesh Elul is early, camps are forced to end early in order to have counselors who are Bnei Torah – counselors must leave before Rosh Chodesh to get back to yeshiva. If left uncorrected, this year there would be a huge gap of literally three weeks between the end of camps and the start of yeshiva. I think we can all agree that having three weeks of unstructured time off after camps are over before yeshiva starts is not a good chinuch idea. I believe every mechanech and bal habos will agree with that premise. Torah Umesorah’s is to simply shift the calendar by one week (not one and a half weeks) and have it based upon Rosh Chodesh Elul and not Labor Day.

UTJ MK Yaakov Asher, the chairman of the Knesset’s Interior Committee, began a meeting on Monday morning by asking for tefillos for the refuah sheleimah of HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein. Asher explained that by davening for the Manhig HaDor, we are really davening for ourselves. “In every generation, the one who ‘pulls the wagon’ are the zakeinei hador,” Asher said. “A zakein is one who acquired wisdom, a lot of experience and insight – that’s why we daven for him as well as for ourselves.” The Rosh Yeshivah’s condition regressed overnight but family members say he is still adhering to his normal schedule in his hospital room but emphasized the need for tefillos.

Baruch Hashem, his situation stabilized by the morning but the Rosh Yeshivah’s family members told B’Chadrei Chareidim that his situation continuously fluctuates: “The Rosh Yeshivha is in need of the tefillos of Am Yisrael and we clearly see how the tefillos help.” A statement from the Rosh Yeshivah’s relatives on Monday morning stated: “Rabbeinu Maran is still in the hospital and continuing his daily schedule as usual and learning in his room.
