To whom it may concern. I am a longtime Rebbi in a Brooklyn Yeshiva. I never in a million years thought I would have to be writing such a letter, but I am left without a choice. A few weeks ago, hundreds of Rabbeiyim and Morah’s were informed – via a letter on YWN – that our summer vacations would be shortened, and that the Yeshivas would be starting earlier than it had been for the past 60 years. The letter was released by Torah Umesorah, and signed by the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva, all of whom I have the utmost Kavod for. Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs in Brooklyn have reached an unprecedented “consensus” to begin the 2023-2024 school year around the start of Elul, rather than with the secular start date of Labor Day.

After HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein was evacuated to the hospital on leil Shavuos, family members assisted the Rosh HaYeshivah in holding the tefillos and seudos of Yom Tov and Shabbos in the ICU. HaRav Edelstein was very disturbed about the fact that while he was still at home on erev Shavuos, he made a bracha for an Eruv Tavshilin but he wouldn’t be performing any melachah since the hospital rules forbid lighting neiros Shabbos in the ICU. The Rosh Yeshivah asked his family members to enable him to perform some type of melachah so he wouldn’t be nichshal in a bracha l’vatalah. And so, a small pot of soup was brought to the ICU and the Rosh Yeshivah stirred the soup so he could have a part in the cooking.

Israelis are constantly on edge due to the large number of terror attacks in recent times as illustrated by an incident in a Tel Aviv café on Motzei Shabbos. A woman sitting in a bar on Rechov Dizengoff spotted a cockroach and screamed in panic, yelling “ג’וק” (cockroach). However, people sitting in in an adjoining café thought she was screaming about a terrorist and began fleeing the scene in panic. “It was the scariest thing that ever happened to me,” a witness told Mako. “Suddenly there was screaming. People panicked and overturned tables. Everyone began shrieking and running and trampling each other.

Rosh Yeshivas Ateres Yisrael HaGaon HaRav Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi, Rabbanim of the yeshivah, and talmidim sang songs of dveikus at the Kosel on Motzei Shavuos/Shabbos at the Kosel. The yeshivah has a minhag going back decades of davening at the Kosel at the end of Shavuos. The singing was videoed by Yaakov Chaninah of HaNekudah. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Renowned entrepreneur and chairman of Forbes Media, Steve Forbes, expressed his belief that President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy will cost him the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race. During an interview on “America’s Newsroom” on Friday, Forbes highlighted the persisting discontent among American voters regarding the state of the economy, with nearly half feeling that Biden’s policies are detrimental and a staggering 83% perceiving the economy as “only fair/poor.” Forbes described the current economic situation as “the economic equivalent of walking pneumonia,” where it may not be officially in a recession, but it weighs heavily on the nation, draining its energy.

HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein was hospitalized on Shavuos night (Thursday night) in the ICU of Mayanei HaYeshua Hospital in Bnei Brak after suffering from shortness of breath. The Rosh Yeshivah started feeling unwell on erev Shavuos. A little after midnight on Shavuos night, it was decided to evacuate him to the hospital, where he was hospitalized throughout Shavuos and Shabbos. In Yeshivas Ponevezh and other yeshivos in Bnei Brak, the seder limmud of Leil Shavuos was stopped in order to recite Tehillim for the Rosh Yeshivah’s refuah sheleimah. On Motzei Shabbos, the Rosh Yeshivah’s family members said that the Rav’s condition is stable and that several family members stayed with him throughout the Chag and held tefillos and seudos in his hospital room.

The founder of the Oath Keepers extremist group was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in prison for orchestrating a weekslong plot that culminated in his followers attacking the U.S. Capitol in a bid to keep President Joe Biden out of the White House after the 2020 election. Stewart Rhodes is the first person charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack to be sentenced for seditious conspiracy, and his sentence is the longest that has been handed down so far in the hundreds of Capitol riot cases. It’s another milestone for the Justice Department’s sprawling Jan. 6 investigation, which has led to seditious conspiracy convictions against the top leaders of two far-right extremist groups authorities say came to Washington prepared to fight to keep President Donald Trump in power at all costs.

It wasn’t always this way. Before Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis were leading rivals for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, they were allies. Trump gave DeSantis’ gubernatorial bid an early boost by tweeting his support even before DeSantis formally entered the race. In his 2018 victory speech, DeSantis made sure to thank the president, saying, “I think we’ll have a great partnership.” Here’s how DeSantis and Trump’s relationship has evolved — and broken down — as the two face off to take on Democrat Joe Biden: ‘UNITE BEHIND THE REPUBLICAN TICKET’ During the 2016 presidential campaign, then-congressman DeSantis said he wouldn’t make an endorsement in the crowded field but would support the eventual nominee.

The DeSantis presidential campaign got off to quite the rocky start on Wednesday night as he  encountered major technical difficulties on Twitter during his planned presidential campaign announcement. During the scheduled conversation between DeSantis and Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, technical issues such as crashes, feedback glitches, and audio failures occurred. Musk acknowledged the strain on the servers during the live audio stream on Twitter’s Spaces feature. The conversation was delayed for at least 25 minutes after its intended 6 p.m. ET start time. Musk and David Sacks, an investor and ally of both individuals, initiated a new Twitter Spaces webcast after the initial one failed.
