After tens of Jews were tragically trampled in the Meron disaster several days ago, the stories brought to light about one man in particular have made a remarkable impact.
Shimon Matlon was the father of eight and a beloved teacher in Beitar. His friends describe him as a kind-hearted and generous man whose face would light up the room with his warm smile.

Last night, amid the celebrations of Lag Ba’Omer in Meron, an absolute unthinkable tragedy occurred: An unstoppable stampede of people began to slip down Har Meron, crushing men young and old, and r”l children, to death. At least 44 people have died, and emergency responders say 150 are injured.
Right now a field hospital has been set up in Meron and ZAKA & Hatzolah are doing all they can to treat the wounded and gather the remains of the killed. The names of the dead & missing have not been released yet – cell phones are down and chaos is in full swing. The phones of the dead are ringing incessantly with “Mom” and “My dear wife,” as families frantically search for their loved ones.

At the request of Maran Harav Chaim Kanievsky Shlit”a, Kupat Ha’ir is setting up a fund to help the families of the victims and the wounded.
All the money will be distributed according to the guidelines set by HaRav Shmuel Eliezer Stern Shlit”a.

R’ Naftali Kirzner was known to have a way with words. He was an active & outgoing member of a small Jewish community in Ukraine, where he gave shiurim and translated texts from Hebrew to Russian. That’s what made it all the more worrisome when, last Thursday, members of the shul noticed that he was speaking incoherently.

Nurses at Hadassah Har HaTzofim Hospital in Jerusalem gasped in shock as a routine check up turned into an event which became the talk of the entire staff. They had been checking in on the vitals of a patient who had been unresponsive for two years. As they took notes on his condition that morning, however, Yaakov Simyonov did something they thought he would never see: He woke up.
Yaakov had been a young, healthy father of 7 living in the town of Rechasim, when he suffered a sudden severe stroke. In a single moment he came nearly brain-dead. For days, then weeks, his wife and children sat by his hospital bed, waiting for him to return to himself. Tragically, he did not. For two years, he laid in bed.

SCENE 1: THE HALLWAYS OF THE BELZ CHEDER IN ASHDOD
Yanky had never been very much into learning. He was too busy worrying about the next time his father would get angry. Expertly he learned to hide his bruises, keep secrets from friends. Day after day he dozed through class, wishing he could do something more exciting.
That is, until he started Rebbi Einhorn’s class. Reb Einhorn was like anyone he had ever known. Something about his smile, his wisdom, his warmth, made school feel like a home away from home. Rebbi Einhorn exposed Yanky & his peers to Gemara for the first time, and they were blown away by the excitement & depth that could be within Torah shebaal peh.
