New York’s attorney general sued the New York Police Department on Thursday, calling the rough treatment of protesters against racial injustice last spring part of a longstanding pattern of abuse that stemmed from inadequate training, supervision and discipline. Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit includes dozens of examples of alleged misconduct during the spring demonstrations in the wake of George Floyd’s police killing, including the use of pepper spray and batons on protesters, trapping demonstrators with a technique called kettling and arresting medics and legal observers. “We found a pattern of deeply concerning and unlawful practices that the NYPD utilized in response to these largely peaceful protests,” James said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, said she had a “close encounter where I thought I was going to die” during the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Ocasio-Cortez spoke for more than an hour during an Instagram Live event just after midnight Wednesday. She said she couldn’t go into full detail of what exactly happened to her due to “security reasons.” AOCz said that Congress is looking into media literacy initiatives, including a commission to help “rein in” misinformation in the wake of last week’s deadly breach of the U.S. Capitol.

President-elect Joe Biden should “consider” pardoning President Donald Trump to allow the U.S. to move forward, former FBI director James Comey has said. Comey said it was right to impeach the president and that it would be “good for our country” if he were removed from office before Inauguration Day, but that when Biden takes office, he should look at granting clemency to Trump “as part of healing the country.” Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017, told the BBC that “I obviously think he belongs in jail but I don’t think pursuing that is in the best interest of the entire nation.” Meanwhile, Former FBI Deputy Dir. Andrew McCabe responded to his old boss.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy spoke on the House floor this morning ahead of a vote to impeach President Donald Trump for inciting insurrection. House Republican Leader McCarthy made the case against impeachment, saying that a vote to impeach will further divide the nation and fan the flames of partisan division at a time when unity is needed. In his remarks McCarty made a big statement: “Some say the riots were caused by Antifa. There is absolutely no evidence of that. And conservatives should be the first to say so.

The United Arab Emirates helped reunite two more Jewish Yemeni families who have been separated for 21 years, the Emirati WAM news outlet reported on Monday. The UAE helped reunite a first Jewish Yemeni family in August, shortly prior to the announcement of the Israel-UAE normalization deal. The 15 family members of one family were reunited in Abu Dhabi on Sunday after the Emirati authorities facilitated the travel of family members from both Yemen and London. Yitzchak Fayez, 35, told WAM that he hadn’t seen his grandparents and uncle since he was a child, when he immigrated from Yemen to London. Fayez and 11 family members flew in from London to meet Fayez’s grandfather, grandmother and uncle, who were flown in from Yemen. “The last time I saw them was as a child,” he said.

The House of Representatives is on track to impeach President Trump for the second time in 13 months — which would make him as the only president to receive the rebuke twice. This time, though, impeachment could be bipartisan. Republicans all opposed the House vote in December 2019, arguing that it was politically driven. But now some GOP lawmakers are joining Democrats in pointing the finger at the president for using rhetoric that helped spark a violent insurrection at the Capitol last Wednesday that left at least five dead. The impeachment resolution on the House floor Wednesday includes one article, citing “incitement of insurrection,” will be debated on the House floor. Sponsors of the resolution maintain they have the votes already to pass it.
