Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced Thursday she was removing herself as a candidate to be former Vice President Joe Biden’s vice presidential pick. Klobuchar told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell she called Biden Wednesday evening with her decision, saying she believes “this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket.” Biden pledged earlier this year to pick a woman to be his running mate as is currently considering about a half dozen candidates, including several women of color. “After what I’ve seen in my state and what I’ve seen across the country, this is a historic moment and America must seize on this moment,” she said. “There are so many incredibly qualified women. But if you want to heal this nation right now — my party, yes, but our nation — this sure is a hell of a way to do it.

Israeli researchers have developed a technique to “listen in” on conversations by analyzing the vibrations of light bulbs, according to a Wired report. Researchers from Weizmann Institute and Ben-Gurion University tracked the minuscule changes in the light output from light bulbs caused by vibrations from sound waves. They were then able to reproduce the sounds from the vibrations, which of course included conversations (even top-secret) carried out in the light bulb’s vicinity. “Any sound in the room can be recovered from the room with no requirement to hack anything and no device in the room,” Ben-Gurion researcher Ben Nassi told Wired.

An inmate scaled a fence and tried to escape from New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex on Thursday but was captured, jail officials said. City Department of Correction spokesperson Peter Thorne said in a statement that a detainee climbed a recreation yard fence at about 12:30 p.m. and ran toward the shoreline. Thorne said the person was promptly apprehended by correction officers. The spokesperson did not confirm reports that two inmates tried to escape from the jail complex and that one was seen swimming toward LaGuardia Airport. Thursday’s incident followed the embarrassing revelation Wednesday that a Rikers inmate spent more than 90 minutes streaming video on Facebook from inside the sprawling lockup. It was cleared for publication on Wednesday that the Israeli Navy and the Shin Bet thwarted a Hamas attempt to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip from Sinai a few weeks ago. The Shin Bet identified a smuggling ring engaged in smuggling weapons and passed the information along to the IDF’s naval intelligence division. Subsequently, Israeli Navy forces “identified the suspected vessel and directed naval forces to it. The vessel was detained after a chase and the terrorists aboard were transferred to the Shin Bet for questioning,” the IDF spokesperson said. One of the terrorists was Mahmoud Bachar, a senior terrorist who smuggled weapons for several terror groups in the Gaza Strip.
