The Dow plunged Monday after China said it will raise tariffs in retaliation to last week’s tariff increase by the United States.
Worries over the escalation of the trade spat with China just aren’t going away.
US stocks ended the day sharply lower. The Dow closed down 617 points after falling as much as 719 points earlier in the day. The S&P 500 (SPX) fell 2.4% and the Nasdaq (COMP) dropped 3.4%.
The Dow and S&P 500 had their worst day since January 3, according to Refinitiv. The Nasdaq had its worst day of 2019 and biggest one-day drop since December 4, 2018.

Demonstrators said to clash with counterprotest supporting country's conservative dress code

Photos of a Maywood police officer dressed in the traditional style of an Orthodox Jewish man prompted an internal investigation and led officials in Rochelle Park, where the officer is a firefighter, to require anti-harassment training for all township volunteers.
Rochelle Park officials say Pete Donatello III has been disciplined by the fire department for wearing a yarmulke and payes during a party at the township firehouse.
It remains unclear how Donatello was punished, as township officials have either declined to comment or said they didn’t know exactly how the fire chief has handled it.

Carter, 94, fell at his home in Plains, Georgia, Monday morning as he was leaving to go turkey hunting, The Carter Center announced.
The 39th president of the United States is now recovering “comfortably” in the hospital alongside his wife, Rosalynn after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hip. His main concern is returning to the task he set off to complete this morning, according to the statement.
“President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit,” The Carter Center joked. Carter is now the oldest living former president in U.S. history, surpassing George H.W. Bush in March.
