Well-known Chareidi journalist Yanky Farber went on i24 News on Sunday, and blasted Israel Police for using extreme force against Chareidim the past few days. YWN notes that Farber is a long-time resident of Bnei Brak, who served time in the IDF. Farber says that he watched the video of the police officer in Bnei Brak pull out his gun and fire rounds into the air. “He was surrounded by some kids, not violent people. He was a little nervous, and took out his weapon and he shot into the air”, Farber says. “Let me tell you, I was in much more complicated, dangerous situations when I was in the IDF, and I never took out my weapon.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

At least 10 victims were treated after a fire in Flatbush on Sunday evening. The fire started at around 5:45PM in a garage attached to a home that houses special needs adults on the corner of Kings Highway and East 29th Street. Smoke quickly filled the home, and the FDNY along with Flatbush Hatzolah were called. Flatbush Hatzolah dispatched around 8 ambulances and around two dozen volunteers to assist the special needs occupants of the home. They were quickly placed into the warm ambulances, getting out of the frigid temperatures outside. Sources confirmed to YWN that a total of 10 victims were being transported to local hospitals for observation. Bichasdei Hashem, they all appeared to be in stable condition. The fire was quickly brought under control by the FDNY.

Violence in Bnei Brak reached a new level late Sunday night, as violent Hafganos took place around the city, and a group that locals have decided to label “CHARIEID ANTIFA” are causing destruction around the city. At one location, protesters stopped a bus on Kahneman Street, attacked the driver, forced him off, and literally set the bus on fire. Local residents began to scream to the residents in the nearby buildings to evacuate, as the heat of the fire began melting the windows. People began calling the fire department, but they refused to respond until they received a police escort – due to the fact that they are repeatedly attacked by Chareidi extremists when responding to Chareidi neighborhoods. They eventually responded – after more than 30 minutes – and extinguished the blaze.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu‏‏ is sending Mossad head Yossi Cohen to Washington to delineate Israel’s demands of Iran prior to the US rejoining the 2015 nuclear deal, Channel 12 News reported. Cohen, a trusted confidant of the prime minister, is expected to travel to the US next month with a delegation of officials from the defense and foreign ministries. He will be the first senior Israeli official to meet US President Joe Biden and, according to the report, will also meet with the newly appointed CIA Deputy Director David Cohen (who previously served in the position from 2015 to 2017). Cohen will reportedly present new information on Iran’s nuclear program to Biden and senior US defense officials.

Following the Thursday night incident where police officers enforcing COVID guidelines at Vichnitz Merkaz (Reb Mendel) were attacked, many people are stating that police are taking revenge against the community. Local residents who have followed all COVID restrictions that YWN spoke with state that hundreds of officers terrorized the entire Bnei Brak all night, and again on Motzei Shabbos. The crackdown continued, and residents began clashing with police. Shocking footage has emerged of police using excessive force at many hotspots around the country. In Ashdod on Sunday morning, police arrived to enforce the closure of a Yeshiva that was open in defiance of the restrictions. The video footage you will see below is simply appalling.

ZAKA director Yehudah Meshi-Zahav lost his father to the coronavirus over Shabbos while still sitting shiva for his mother, who also passed away of the virus, and within the shloshim (30 days) of his brother’s death after contracting the virus HaRav Menachem Mendel Meshi-Zahav, z’l, was found in his home unconscious on Friday morning and was evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away a day later on Shabbos afternoon at the age of 84. HaRav Menachem Mendel was born in Jerusalem to his father, Rav Chaim Dovid, z’l who was known for his ability to read hands, which perhaps he learned from his father Rav Yisrael Yitzchak, z’l, a mekubal.

Israeli authorities have struggled to enforce compliance in ultra-Orthodox communities. On Sunday, religious demonstrators clashed with police in several cities. Throughout the pandemic, many major ultra-Orthodox sects have flouted safety regulations, continuing to open schools, pray in synagogues and hold mass weddings in funerals. This has contributed to a disproportionate infection rate, with the ultra-Orthodox community accounting for over one-third of Israel’s coronavirus cases, despite making up just over 10% of the population. In Jerusalem, police fired tear gas and putrid-smelling water to disperse a crowd of hundreds of ultra-Orthodox residents outside a reopened school. Demonstrators cried “get out of here, Nazis” at officers who were filmed arresting participants.

Israel’s vaccination campaign expanded to teenagers aged 16-18 on Motzei Shabbos as the world’s fastest inoculation drive pushes full speed ahead, with about a quarter of the country’s population already vaccinated. The vaccination of this age group is aimed to allow 11th and 12th graders to return to their classrooms so they can take their matriculation (bagrut) exams on time. Teenagers being vaccinated must either be accompanied by one of their parents or bring a written permission slip signed by a parent. The Health Ministry confirmed an additional 81 fatalities from the virus just over the weekend, with the death toll now standing at 4,326. There are currently 76,783 active virus cases, with 1,171 seriously ill patients, of whom 335 are ventilated.
