Two weeks ago, Berlin’s frum community joined the world in celebrating the Siyum HaShas. This week, the world joined Berlin in celebrating the LOMED Siyum Mishnayos. Kahal Adass Jisroel of Berlin is the largest frum community in Germany, with about 80 shomer Shabbos families. Germany is home to some 120,000 yidden, following only France and England with the third-largest Jewish population in Europe. Only a small percentage of those are observant, but for those who are, the community in Berlin serves as the epicenter; the core of strong Yiddeshkeit from which even those further away can gain. Many move to Berlin from other cities when their children reach school-age, to provide them with a proper Torah education.

SpaceX completed the last big test of its crew capsule before launching astronauts in the next few months, mimicking an emergency escape shortly after liftoff Sunday. No one was aboard for the wild ride in the skies above Cape Canaveral, just two mannequins. The nine-minute flight ended with the Dragon crew capsule parachuting safely into the Atlantic, after separating and speeding away from the exploding rocket. “I’m super fired up,” Elon Musk, the company’s founder and chief executive, told reporters. “It’s just going to be wonderful to get astronauts back into orbit from American soil after almost a decade of not being able to do so. That’s just super exciting.” NASA astronauts have not launched from the U.S. since the space shuttle program ended in 2011.

Rabbi Marc Schneier of the Hampton Synagogue met with the Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister last week, and spent Shabbos in Riyadh. Schneier is the founder of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, originally to rebuild the historic Black-Jewish alliance in the United States and for the past 15 years, to build Muslim-Jewish relations globally, and has met with many Gulf State leaders. In an interview with Ynet, Schneier said he predicts that Baharain will be the first to open diplomatic ties with israel, and the rest will follow. While foreigners of other religions can worship privately in Saudi Arabia, there are no public churches, temples or synagogues.

The most serious outbreak of locusts in 25 years is spreading across East Africa and posing an unprecedented threat to food security in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries, authorities say. Unusual climate conditions are partly to blame. The locust swarms hang like shimmering dark clouds on the horizon in some places. Roughly the length of a finger, the insects fly together by the millions and are devouring crops and forcing people in some areas to bodily wade through them. Near the Kenyan town of Isiolo on Thursday, one young camel herder swung a stick at them, with little effect. Others tried to shout them away. An “extremely dangerous increase” in locust swarm activity has been reported in Kenya, the East African regional body reported this week.

“The House’s hour is over,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared Thursday in a floor speech slamming Democrats for putting on a “partisan performance” celebrating the signing of articles of impeachment by handing out souvenirs and posing for smiling photos. To critics, the tone of the event seemed celebratory — a far cry from December, when Pelosi wore black and insisted on the House floor it was a “solemn” day before the Democrat-controlled body voted to impeach the president on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress allegations. Later, she even cut short two rounds of cheers from Democrats when the articles were adopted.

What do haredim have to do with Israeli high-tech? Evidently a lot, when we consider the high-tech industry’s major HR shortage, and that the haredi community is an untapped resource that can meet this growing need. This was the purpose of the haredi high-tech conference held at the Jerusalem Waldorf Astoria on Wednesday. The conference, organized by Bizmax – Achim Global’s Jerusalem business hub, established with the Kemach Foundation and the Jerusalem Development Authority – brought together 1300 HR managers, executives across the high-tech industry, and officials promoting haredi integration in the workforce. Increasing haredi integration in the workforce has been a top priority. Indeed, over the last decade we have seen significant improvement in haredi employment.

This Israeli driver decided to stop at every Police camera on a highway in Afula and destroy them. Watch as he slows down by every camera, exit his vehicle, pick up the traffic cameras, and throw them into the roadway. No idea why he was doing this, but Police are looking for him. An NYPD Traffic enforcement vehicle was captured on camera driving on a sidewalk in Boro Park. The video, provided to YWN by BP24, shows the marked police cruiser on 14th Avenue and 49th Street driving on the sidewalk. The police car does not have his emergency lights and sirens on. Last year YWN reported about a Boro Park resident that took the sidewalk and was arrested for doing so.
